How To Make Your Own Dry Shampoo

We all know how to wash our hair with the old fashioned “standard” shampoo, but a lot of us don’t have a clue how to give our hair a “dry” shampooing. Dry shampoo is becoming all the rage these days as people are recognizing just how damaging it is to apply a detergent to our hair (the detergent being shampoo) on a daily basis. But what is dry shampoo?
What is Dry Shampoo?

Dry shampoo is typically a powder that will contain some sort of powder that acts as an absorbing agent. The powder used is usually talcum powder or a corn starch, but it can be an assortment of other powders as well. Some dry shampoos will include a fragrance so as to make your hair smell “cleaner”.
The powders in the dry shampoo will help absorb any extra oil, dirt, and product build-up from the day or days previous. Most dry shampoos are left in for a few minutes before they are then combed out of your hair.
TIP: Some dry shampoos come as an aerosol or canned “spray”. These sprays work in the exact same fashion as above, except the spray allows for an easier and more even application.
Who can Use a Dry Shampoo?
Anyone can use a dry shampoo. The best candidates are those with shorter hair, just because it is easier to clean shorter hair than longer hair, but if you do have long hair a dry shampoo can work for you if you are 2-3 days between shampooings.
How can I Make my Own?
Making your own dry shampoo is a cinch. To begin, you will need to gather the following ingredients:
  • 150 grams (or 5 oz) of coarse-ground couscous, semolina, or cornmeal
  • 30 drops of essential oil of lemon
  • 20 drops of castor oil
Take out your blender and add the ingredients. Mix the ingredients and blend them together for 5 seconds or so. Before you apply this dry shampoo to your hand, you will want to be sure that you are in an area that can be easily cleaned (such as a sink, or you have covered the floor with a towel or newspapers). Bend your head forward, and then pinch the mixture in so that it is being distributed. Make sure that the dry shampoo is being applied to both the scalp and your hair. Now gently massage the dry shampoo into your entire head, working in sections so you know that every area is being covered.

Once you have finished that step, take your comb or brush and brush out the dry shampoo. Continue to do this until your hair is shiny and until all traces of powder or dry shampoo are long gone. Flip your head back up, shake out your hand, and enjoy the results!
This dry shampoo is a great “quick fix” for anyone who is wanting healthier, stronger hair, or for anyone whose hair needs just a bit of a “clean up” a day or two after a wet shampooing.
